Your child may return to school after treatment has begun.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The school will notify you if there are known cases of headlice in a particular class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-are-head-lice\">What are head lice?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Head lice are very common and have been around for thousands of years. Anyone can get head lice and some people get them multiple times per year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Head lice are small, wingless insects that feed on blood from the scalp. Nits are the eggs of headlice and can be white, or black.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Head lice die very quickly away from the head (usually within 24 hours).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Head lice crawl and cannot fly or jump from head to head.&nbsp; Head lice can only be spread when people are in close contact, or by sharing hats, combs etc. with another person who has head lice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"where-to-start\">Where to start<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"to-help-prevent-the-spread-of-head-lice-we-ask-that-you\">To help prevent the spread of head lice, we ask that you:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>notify your child\u2019s school as soon as you detect head lice or nits in your child\u2019s hair<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>take advice as to the best treatment for your child and family and follow the pharmacist\u2019s instruction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-your-school-will-do\">What your school will do<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The school will notify you if there is reason to believe your child has head lice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The school will notify parents if there are known cases of head lice in a particular class and ask parents to check their children\u2019s hair.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The school will&nbsp;<strong>not<\/strong>&nbsp;administer treatment to your child.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tips\">Tips<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Head lice can be hard to spot but look out for brown or grey insects about the size of a match head that sit at the roots of your child\u2019s hair.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A nit will not easily come off the hair, but dandruff will.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teach your child not to share brushes, combs, hats, swimming caps or hair bands, and to keep long hair tied back at school<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider washing bedding and clothes if your child has head lice to avoid recurrence after treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"where-can-i-get-more-information\">Where can I get more information?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A pharmacist or doctor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talk to your child\u2019s teacher or principal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.tas.gov.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Health website<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/raisingchildren.net.au\/guides\/a-z-health-reference\/head-lice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raising Children\u2019s Network<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What are head lice?
