Tests and assessments are used to identify where children and schools are going well, and also where they might need some assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results of tests are used to identify how students are learning in Tasmania and across Australia. Some are also used to see how our students compare to those in the rest of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"block-emphasis\">\n\t<div class=\"block-emphasis__inner\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>Students should not worry about the tests and should be encouraged to do their best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Results will be kept confidential, and your child should not feel pressured or stressed.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"are-the-tests-compulsory\">Are the tests compulsory?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Testing is a good way for you and your child\u2019s teacher to see how your child is progressing. Test results also help teachers to identify ways in which to improve their teaching.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are concerned or have any questions please contact your child\u2019s teacher or principal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"helping-your-child-prepare-for-a-test\">Helping your child prepare for a test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can help by making sure your child:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>has a good night\u2019s sleep before a test<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>eats a good breakfast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>stays calm, and just does their best.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"about-the-tests\">About the tests<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h3 id=\"at-12930\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Kindergarten Development Check<\/h3><div id=\"ac-12930\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>The Kindergarten Development Check (KDC) is designed to assist teachers monitor the development of kindergarten students and identify those at risk of not achieving expected developmental outcomes. The Check provides information to support teachers educational planning and referral to allied health professionals when required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For further information,&nbsp;please contact your child\u2019s school.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h3 id=\"at-12931\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Progressive Achievement Tests<\/h3><div id=\"ac-12931\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT) are used across Tasmania Government schools to monitor student progress in reading and mathematics from Prep to Year 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For further information on the assessment visit the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acer.org\/au\/pat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Progressive Achievement Tests website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h3 id=\"at-12932\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">National Assessment Program \u2013 Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)<\/h3><div id=\"ac-12932\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>NAPLAN is undertaken by all Australian school children in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in March each year.\u00a0The tests gauge your child\u2019s strengths and areas for improvement in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation. You will receive an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu.au\/results-and-reports\/student-reports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Individual Student Report | NAP<\/a>\u00a0outlining your child\u2019s achievements in their NAPLAN assessments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four areas (or \u2018domains\u2019) of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reading<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Numeracy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Further information is available from:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu.au\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Assessment Program website<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nap.edu.au\/naplan\/parent-carer-support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Advice for parents and caregivers about NAPLAN<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h3 id=\"at-12933\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">National Assessment Program \u2013 Sample Assessments<\/h3><div id=\"ac-12933\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>The NAP Sample Assessments test students\u2019 skills and understanding in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu.au\/nap-sample-assessments\/science-literacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Science Literacy<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu.au\/nap-sample-assessments\/civics-and-citizenship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Civics and Citizenship<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu.au\/nap-sample-assessments\/ict-literacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Literacy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Randomly selected groups of students in Years 6 and 10 participate in these sample assessments, which are held on a rolling three-yearly basis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Further information is available from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu.au\/nap-sample-assessments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NAP sample assessment webpage<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h3 id=\"at-12934\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Other Assessments<\/h3><div id=\"ac-12934\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>The <strong>Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS)<\/strong> is conducted every four years and tests students in Year 4 and Year 8, in a random sample of schools, in maths and science. It enables us to compare the performance of Australian students in maths and science with that of students in other countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further information is available from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acer.org\/au\/timss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TIMSS website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA)<\/strong> is conducted every three years with a random sample of students aged 15 years in a representative sample of schools across Australia.&nbsp; It is a test used around the world and enables Australia to monitor student performance in comparison to students in other countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further information is available from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/pisa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PISA website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Progress in International Reading Literacy (PIRLS)<\/strong> is conducted every four years for students in Year 4 and tests literacy in a random sample of schools.
