Most social media sites require users to be at least 13 years of age before they can register, although some sites are created especially for children under 13.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage respect and empathy. Teach them to avoid sharing or posting things that may upset others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage them to learn about online safety by exploring the&nbsp;e Safety Commissioner Kids website:&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esafety.gov.au\/kids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kids &#8211; eSafety Commissioner<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be clear about how much time they can spend online, the apps they can use, the websites they can visit and what they can share or post online.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure your own devices are protected by a password or pin, so your child cannot accidentally come across inappropriate content.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use parental control tools appropriate for the age and experience of your child.&nbsp;Be upfront and get your child on board. Let them know that these can be reviewed and changed as they get older and they continue to demonstrate responsible behaviour. This includes personal details, online photos and social media identity.&nbsp;It is important your child is aware of where and how their information is available online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They should think about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who can access it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What others may be doing with their information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The impression they are leaving for others to find.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-can-i-protect-my-childs-privacy-when-they-are-online\">How can I protect my child\u2019s privacy when they are&nbsp;online?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Update the privacy settings on devices, applications (apps) and software your child is using. You can find out more about using devices safely on the eSafety Commissioner website: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esafety.gov.au\/key-issues\/how-to\/use-device-safely\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Use your device safely &#8211; eSafety Commissioner<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get involved and explore the online world with them.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Play alongside them in online games and see what kinds of information they may be sharing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get to know the apps and devices your child is using. Find out about different apps, games and social media platforms on the eSafety Guide: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esafety.gov.au\/key-issues\/esafety-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The eSafety Guide &#8211; eSafety Commissioner<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Respect their&nbsp;privacy.
