{"id":48259,"date":"2025-11-19T13:19:46","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T02:19:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.decyp.tas.gov.au\/?page_id=48259"},"modified":"2026-02-05T16:20:48","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T05:20:48","slug":"big-picture-learning","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/decyp.dev.ionata.com\/ja\/learning\/learning-programs\/big-picture-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Picture Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"block-emphasis\">\n\t<div class=\"block-emphasis__inner\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Big Picture learning is offered at <a href=\"https:\/\/lbps.education.tas.edu.au\/\">Launceston Big Picture School<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hobartcityhigh.education.tas.edu.au\/big-picture-at-hobart-city\">Hobart City High School<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students in Years 9-12 who cannot access the program in these locations, can now access it virtually!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are interested in joining virtual Big Picture, email <br><a href=\"mailto:P-12provision@decyp.tas.gov.au\">P-12provision@decyp.tas.gov.au<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"is-big-picture-learning-for-me-my-child\">Is Big Picture learning for me\/my child?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does your child like the idea of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>learning through their interests and passions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>self-directed and independent learning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>learning on an internship with a mentor one day a week to gain experience in an area of personal interest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>learning in a small supportive group<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>being assessed through exhibitions rather than exams?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-big-picture-learning\">What is Big Picture Learning?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Big Picture Learning Australia (BPLA) is a not-for-profit organisation established in 2006 that works with DECYP to offer an innovative, personalised approach to learning both inside and outside school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Big Picture, school and learning are organised around:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>learning through personal interests and passions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>managing your own learning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>connecting to people and places in the community<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>developing the confidence and skills for life beyond school<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>six Learning Goals:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Communication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social Reasoning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quantitative Reasoning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Empirical Reasoning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personal Qualities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowing How to Learn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the program, each student has a personalised learning plan, based on their interests, passions and learning preferences. Accredited Big Picture Advisors support students through their personalised learning journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students learn in small groups, where there is a culture of belonging, support and respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learning through internship is an important part of Big Picture learning. Students spend time in a workplace that matches their interests and complete practical projects. They work with a mentor who is an expert in that field. This gives students the chance to learn from an adult with similar interests and gain real-world experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Families are involved in helping their children develop Learning Plans and attending exhibitions of their learning each term.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A range of learning styles are encouraged and supported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"virtual-big-picture-learning\">Virtual Big Picture Learning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learning for students in the virtual program will be, depending on their individual learning plan, a mixture of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>accessing learning virtually from home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>attending classes at their local school<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>internships<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They will be connected with peers at Launceston Big Picture School and Hobart City High School, alongside opportunities to connect with students in Big Picture programs nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-qualification-will-i-my-child-gain-from-this\">What qualification will I\/my child gain from this?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through Big Picture, students can get the International Big Picture Learning Credential (IBPLC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This credential can contribute to the attainment of the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-does-big-picture-learning-look-like\">What does Big Picture Learning look like?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"years-9-and-10\">Years 9 and 10<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the program, students in years 9 and 10 may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>explore interest topics in-depth, both inside and outside school<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>consider school subjects or external courses of interest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>read books<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>build a digital portfolio<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>plan and present exhibitions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>develop and engage in Social Action Projects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>regularly review their learning plan and check progress against learning goals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>plan and participate in learning experiences outside school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"years-11-and-12\">Years 11 and 12<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the program, students in years 11 and 12 may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>play a leadership role in the advisory group<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>plan and manage in-depth learning projects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>engage in pathway planning and preparation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>undertake pathway-aligned school subjects or external courses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>continue learning experiences outside school<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>meet regularly with mentors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>read broadly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>complete a Social Action Project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>finish building a digital portfolio<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>doing activities to prepare for life after school.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find out more at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigpicture.org.au\/\">Home | Big Picture Learning Australia<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"block-card block-card--wp block-card--horizontal\">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/decyp.dev.ionata.com\/ja\/learning\/vocational-learning\/sophies-story-learning-by-doing-leading-with-confidence\/\" class=\"block-card__inner block-card__inner--link\" target=\"\">\n                    <div class=\"block-card__image\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/decyp-dev-ionata-com.assets.ionatahosting.net\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Sophie-768x1024.jpeg)\" ><\/div>\n        \n        <div class=\"block-card__content\">\n            \n                            <h2 class=\"card-title\">\n                    <div class=\"card-title__inner\">\n                        <span class=\"card-title__text\">\n                            Sophie\u2019s story: Learning by doing, leading with confidence                        <\/span>\n                    <\/div>\n                <\/h2>\n            \n                            <p>When Sophie joined Hobart City High School\u2019s Big Picture program, she knew traditional learning alone wouldn\u2019t be enough.<\/p>\n                    <\/div>\n\t<\/a>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is Big Picture learning for me\/my child?
