{"id":1237,"date":"2017-06-20T12:47:47","date_gmt":"2017-06-20T02:47:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.decyp.tas.gov.au\/?page_id=1237"},"modified":"2023-09-08T16:14:07","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T06:14:07","slug":"school-speech-pathologists","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/decyp.dev.ionata.com\/ko\/learning\/supporting-student-need\/school-speech-pathologists\/","title":{"rendered":"School Speech and Language Pathologists"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"does-your-child-need-help-from-a-speech-and-language-pathologist\">Does your child need help from a speech and language pathologist?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"block-emphasis\">\n\t<div class=\"block-emphasis__inner\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is your child easy to understand when speaking?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is your child able to understand what you say?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is your child able to create sentences that make sense?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is your child able to eat and drink without coughing and choking?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is your child able to read and spell as well as children their age?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is your child able to speak without stuttering?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you answered \u2018no\u2019 to any of these questions, a speech and language pathologist may be able to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To find out more, talk to your child\u2019s teacher or principal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further details about the role of a speech and language pathologist is available at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.speechpathologyaustralia.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Speech Pathology Australia website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-do-speech-and-language-pathologists-do\">What do speech and language pathologists do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"speech-and-language-pathologists-work-with-students-who\">Speech and language pathologists work with students who:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>are difficult to understand when speaking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have difficulty with understanding language (eg. question, instructions)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have difficulty expressing themselves&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>stutter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have difficulty with eating and drinking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have complex communication needs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have difficulty with literacy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have difficulty with social skills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Speech and language pathologists work with class teachers, support teachers and teacher assistants to help students join in at school and achieve their educational goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"speech-and-language-pathologists-assess-students-and-provide-support-through\">Speech and language pathologists assess students and provide support through:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>professional learning for school staff<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whole class programs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>group therapy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>teacher assistant programs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>home programs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>individualised class programs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>individual therapy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>telepractice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Speech and language pathologists also work closely with school psychologists and social workers to help children achieve the best outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-are-students-referred\">How are students referred?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Referrals may come from teachers, other support staff or parents. Forms are available from the school. A parent or guardian must sign the consent form for a referral to be completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"confidentiality\">Confidentiality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Information given to the speech and language pathologist is kept in a confidential file and can only be shared by consent or by law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"professional-standards\">Professional Standards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Speech and language pathologists are university trained specialists and must abide by the National Code of Conduct for Health Care Workers.
