{"id":24153,"date":"2022-08-24T15:04:36","date_gmt":"2022-08-24T05:04:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.decyp.tas.gov.au\/?page_id=24153"},"modified":"2024-06-21T11:53:36","modified_gmt":"2024-06-21T01:53:36","slug":"foster-care","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/decyp.dev.ionata.com\/ms\/safe-children\/out-of-home-care-in-tasmania\/foster-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Family Based Care"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"block-emphasis\">\n\t<div class=\"block-emphasis__inner\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"key-information\">Key information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Family based foster care settings provide children with a family environment for as long as needed until they can return to their families or until they exit care, generally at 18 years of age.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foster carers are individuals, couples and families that open their homes and hearts to children and young people when they are unable to live at home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>\u201cWhether it is for one weekend a month or for longer it will&nbsp;make a difference in the life of a child.\u201d<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"types-of-family-based-care\">Types of family based care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Children and young people come into care for as long as needed. This can be from a few days to a few weeks or longer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h3 id=\"at-241530\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Emergency care<\/h3><div id=\"ac-241530\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>Emergency Care is provided for a short period, usually a few days, when children or young people need urgent care to ensure their safety or following a family crisis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emergency carers need to be prepared to support children and young people who need extra comfort and reassurance because entering care can be an uncertain time for them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The period of emergency care may be busy with many appointments and meetings to attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this period, Child Safety may be seeking a family member to care for the child or young person in a kinship placement.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h3 id=\"at-241531\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Respite care<\/h3><div id=\"ac-241531\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>Respite care is provided for children and young people for short periods of time on a regular basis, for example, one weekend a month. Respite placements provide the child or young person and primary carers with a network of support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wherever possible respite carers are identified to provide regular respite for the child or young person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Respite carers are an important part of the child or young person&#8217;s Care Team. They ensure consistency of care and routine when the child or young person is not with their primary care giver. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h3 id=\"at-241532\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Kinship care<\/h3><div id=\"ac-241532\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>Kinship care is a formal arrangement, similar to foster care and is provided by members of the child or young person\u2019s extended family or an adult who is known to the child and their family (e.g. a close family friend).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wherever possible, an Aboriginal child must be placed with kin or kith within the Tasmanian Aboriginal community.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h3 id=\"at-241533\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Short-term care<\/h3><div id=\"ac-241533\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>Children and young people may need care for a short period of time prior to being restored to their families or while a longer-term care arrangement is being organised.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carers may be asked to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>attend appointments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>support the child or young person to spend time with their family <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>support the child or young person to attend school and stay involved in existing activities, like sports or hobbies.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>During this time, children and young people may feel anxious about their families, pets, toys or want to return home and need flexibility and patience.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h3 id=\"at-241534\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Long-term care<\/h3><div id=\"ac-241534\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>If children and young people are not able to be restored to their families, they may need a long-term carer. This provides them with a stable, supportive home in which they can feel included and valued. This may be until the circumstances of their families change, or until they exit the Out of Home Care system, as young adults.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h3 id=\"at-241535\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Therapeutic care<\/h3><div id=\"ac-241535\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>Specialist therapeutic care is provided to children and young people with high needs, such as disabilities or complex medical or developmental trauma needs. Carers who are experienced in these areas may be asked to look after a child or young person with more complex needs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h3 id=\"at-241536\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Intensive supported foster care<\/h3><div id=\"ac-241536\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>Intensive Supported Foster Care provides a child or young person the opportunity to live in a family home while receiving therapeutic support.
