We support you until it\u2019s safe to go home again, or safe to live somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Child Safety Service is part of the Tasmanian Government, in the Department for Education, Children and Young People.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our job is to provide safety and stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-we-are-here\">Why we are here<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, it\u2019s not a child or young person\u2019s fault if the Child Safety Service is involved with their family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All families need support from friends, relatives or the community. When things get difficult, it\u2019s hard to solve problems on your own. Sometimes professional help is needed, and that\u2019s where we come in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Child Safety Service want all children and young people to be safe in their parent\u2019s care. We also want parents to be supported to be the best parents they can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is guided by the values in the <a href=\"https:\/\/decyp.dev.ionata.com\/ms\/safe-children\/guide-to-tasmanias-child-safety-services\/child-safety-practice-framework\/\">Child Safety Practice Framework<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-we-do\">What we do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We work together with the child or young person, and their family, to find ways to solve any problems affecting the safety and wellbeing of a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our first point of contact is usually over the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We may suggest a home visit, and will make a time to visit you to talk about your situation. This is where you can voice any worries, in the comfort of your own home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Child Safety Officer or Safety and Wellbeing Worker makes home visits. They will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>introduce themselves and provide their Tasmanian Government identification<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>explain what they do and why they\u2019re visiting you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>talk about your situation, your strengths, and things that may be affecting your child\u2019s safety and wellbeing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>talk about options for referrals and support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>help you do up a safety plan for your child\u2019s safety and wellbeing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>spend time with your child or young person.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"family-meetings\">Family meetings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Family group conferences is a meeting with everyone important to the child or young person, and the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key outcome of a family group conference is to create a safety plan for the child or young person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone who goes to this meeting gets a copy of the safety plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-happens-next\">What happens next<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There could be more follow-up home visits and phone calls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the situation, a child or young people can keep living at home if it\u2019s safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But sometimes, they may need to live somewhere else \u2013 either for a very short time or longer. They\u2019ll support you, and help you reach your goals. See our <a href=\"https:\/\/decyp.dev.ionata.com\/ms\/safe-children\/guide-to-tasmanias-child-safety-services\/child-safety-service-care-teams\/\">Care team page<\/a> to learn more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes the Child Safety Service goes to court to make a protection order, to keep a child or young person safe. <a href=\"https:\/\/decyp.dev.ionata.com\/ms\/safe-children\/guide-to-tasmanias-child-safety-services\/the-role-of-the-court-in-keeping-children-and-young-people-safe\/\">The role of the court in keeping children and young people safe page<\/a> has more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cultural-considerations\">Cultural considerations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We acknowledge the disadvantage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and families have experienced in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who come into care are supported to have lasting connections to family, community, culture and Country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander child is unable to stay in the care of their parents safely, together we work to make sure they are placed with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the child\u2019s family and kinship networks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the child\u2019s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander carers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If the above options aren\u2019t possible, and the child is placed with non-Indigenous carers, our focus is to maintain the child\u2019s connection with their family, community and culture.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Who we are The Child Safety Service is committed to keeping children and young people safe from harm and ensuring they are well cared for.
