This is called \u2018out of home care\u2019 or being \u2018in care\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children and young people come into care for lots of different reasons. Their parent might be having problems, or it might not be safe for them to be at home. It\u2019s not their fault if they come into care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-happens-in-care\">What happens in care?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If a child or young person is in care, they can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>talk to their family and other people who matter to them, if it\u2019s safe to do so<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>spend time with brothers and sisters if they don\u2019t live together<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>choose not to see anyone, if they don\u2019t want to<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>spend time with their Child Safety Officer and <a href=\"https:\/\/decyp.dev.ionata.com\/ms\/safe-children\/guide-to-tasmanias-child-safety-services\/child-safety-service-care-teams\/\">care team<\/a> to and have a say about what happens to them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"when-can-i-go-home\">When can I go home?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes you can be in care for a very short time, or longer. It takes as long as needed until it\u2019s safe to go home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some children and young people stay with their carers until they\u2019re adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your care team will be there to support you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"if-your-child-is-in-care\">If your child is in care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re a parent of a child or young person in care, you will be treated with respect and fairness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>request a family group conference<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>participate in your child\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/decyp.dev.ionata.com\/ms\/safe-children\/guide-to-tasmanias-child-safety-services\/child-safety-service-care-teams\/\">care team<\/a> and care planning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>work with your child\u2019s Child Safety Officer so we can understand your goals and needs, and how we can help you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Being in care If a child or young person is unsafe at home, they may need to live with a trusted friend or family member, or with a foster carer.
