{"id":21071,"date":"2021-12-09T11:41:15","date_gmt":"2021-12-09T00:41:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.decyp.tas.gov.au\/?page_id=21071"},"modified":"2023-09-20T15:08:53","modified_gmt":"2023-09-20T05:08:53","slug":"lgbtiq-equality-in-tasmanian-government-schools","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/decyp.dev.ionata.com\/th\/learning\/lgbtiq-equality-in-tasmanian-government-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"LGBTIQA+ equality in Tasmanian government schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The term LGBTIQA+ includes a range of diverse sexual orientations, genders, and sex characteristics (the \u2018<strong>+<\/strong>\u2019 sign is generally used to represent genders and sexual orientations outside of the letters LGBTIQA).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"did-you-know\"><strong>Did you know?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We have been supporting LGBTIQA+ inclusion in Tasmanian schools since 1997. All schools must put in place the necessary supports and programs to achieve a learning environment which is safe, supportive, and inclusive.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is important for all students and their families to feel that they belong to their school community.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discrimination, harassment, or bullying based on sexual orientation, intersex variations and gender identity is not tolerated in our schools and is illegal under the\u202f<em>Anti-Discrimination Act 1998.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LGBTIQA+ students and the children of LGBTIQA+ families are more likely to face stigma, bullying, verbal or physical harassment or humiliation at school than non-LGBTIQA+ students. This can negatively impact on their health and wellbeing, including their success at school.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latrobe.edu.au\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0010\/1198945\/Writing-Themselves-In-4-National-report.pdf\"><em>Writing Themselves In 4 (2021)<\/em> (PDF, 9.5MB)\u202f<\/a>\u202fand\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/apo.org.au\/sites\/default\/files\/resource-files\/2021-04\/apo-nid311780_1.pdf\"><em>Free2Be\u2026Yet (2021) <\/em>(PDF, 2.2MB)<\/a>\u202fshow that challenging prejudice, stigma and discrimination against LGBTIQA+ students can improve their mental health, wellbeing and&nbsp;their educational outcomes. If it goes unchallenged, it can adversely affect the whole school community.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"for-your-child-or-young-person\"><strong>For your child or young person<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All students will be supported to engage in education as their authentic selves.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/publicdocumentcentre.education.tas.gov.au\/library\/Document%20Centre\/Respectful-School-Visitor-and-Volunteer-Behaviour-Procedure.pdf\"><em>Respectful Schools Respectful Behaviour <\/em>(PDF, 520KB)<\/a> resource underpins DECYP\u2019s approach to supporting sexual and gender diversity within schools.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.australiancurriculum.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Australian Curriculum<\/a><strong> <\/strong>students are also supported to value diversity as a key part of the strand\u202f\u2018<em>Personal, Social and Community Health\u2019<\/em>. It supports students to develop knowledge, understanding and skills that will help them to understand that diversity is a part of the world we live in. This helps them to establish and manage respectful relationships.
