{"id":26602,"date":"2023-02-21T10:00:51","date_gmt":"2023-02-20T23:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.decyp.tas.gov.au\/?p=26602"},"modified":"2023-09-04T18:27:52","modified_gmt":"2023-09-04T08:27:52","slug":"we-love-country-book-for-tasmanian-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/decyp.dev.ionata.com\/th\/2023\/02\/we-love-country-book-for-tasmanian-children\/","title":{"rendered":"We love Country book for Tasmanian children"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ratio ratio-16x9\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"We Love Country - audio book\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CxGh83o-bzQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>We love Country <\/em>book has been developed by the Department for Education, Children and Young People in collaboration between Aboriginal Education Services and Early Learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authors Leanne Pelikan, Kylie Dickson and Nicole Smith \u2013 whose mobs are from Tasmania, New South Wales and Victoria \u2013 wrote this story about Nanna showing her grandchildren (and the reader) how they connect with Country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It features beautiful illustrations based on familiar Tasmanian landscapes by local artists Jamin and Luke Emmerton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department\u2019s Deputy Secretary for Development and Support, Jodee Wilson, said the <em>We love Country <\/em>book is for the enjoyment of children and their families.&nbsp;It provides opportunities for all children to engage and learn from the story and the illustrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA picture book like <em>We love Country<\/em> helps our children to understand and value our Tasmanian Aboriginal histories and cultures, particularly Aboriginal people\u2019s connection to Country,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen families spend time together reading and talking, not only do children benefit from enjoying a story, they also learn new words which is good for their vocabulary development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Co-authors and Department Aboriginal Education Services staff, Kylie Dickson and Leanne Pelikan, talk about ways we can connect with Country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>We love Country <\/em>features native Tasmanian animals, plants and locations and explores Country using each of the five senses \u2013 sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. Think: hearing the screeching of yellow-tailed black cockatoos, or smelling the eucalyptus from tall gum trees,\u201d Kylie says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leanne adds, \u201cYoung children learn best by exploring with their senses. This book demonstrates how that works for Aboriginal people and the importance of our connection to Country.
