{"id":24730,"date":"2022-09-26T10:56:52","date_gmt":"2022-09-26T00:56:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.decyp.tas.gov.au\/?page_id=24730"},"modified":"2023-09-21T10:12:30","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T00:12:30","slug":"proposed-youth-justice-facilities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/decyp.dev.ionata.com\/vi\/safe-children\/youth-justice-services\/youth-justice-reform-in-tasmania\/proposed-youth-justice-facilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Proposed youth justice facilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Tasmanian Government announced in September 2021 that the Ashley Youth Detention Centre would close and be replaced by new fit-for-purpose facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/documentcentre.education.tas.gov.au\/_layouts\/15\/DocIdRedir.aspx?ID=TASED-1087178304-5252\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Draft Youth Justice Facilities Model (PDF, 462KB)<\/a> released in late 2022 identified the need for five new purpose-built facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One detention facility in the south<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two support centres (working title), one in the north and one in the south<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two assisted bail facilities (working title), one in the north and one in the south.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A preliminary assessment has identified three potential sites in the greater Hobart area for the new detention facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are sites at <a href=\"https:\/\/documentcentre.education.tas.gov.au\/_layouts\/15\/DocIdRedir.aspx?ID=TASED-1087178304-5471\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2B Goodwood Road Dowsing Point, (PDF, 480KB)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/documentcentre.education.tas.gov.au\/_layouts\/15\/DocIdRedir.aspx?ID=TASED-1087178304-5470\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">972 East Derwent Highway Risdon (PDF, 461KB)<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/documentcentre.education.tas.gov.au\/_layouts\/15\/DocIdRedir.aspx?ID=TASED-1087178304-5469\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> 466 Brighton Road (between Pontville and Mangalore) (PDF, 502KB)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The criteria for determining suitability of a site for the new detention facility includes:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Located in the greater Hobart region, within reasonable driving distance from the Hobart CBD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Located away from schools and major residential areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Site size greater than two hectares<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Government-owned&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Appropriately zoned under the relevant Tasmanian Planning Scheme as a permitted or discretionary use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on this preliminary assessment, the sites at <a href=\"https:\/\/documentcentre.education.tas.gov.au\/_layouts\/15\/DocIdRedir.aspx?ID=TASED-1087178304-5469\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">466 Brighton Road (PDF, 502KB)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/documentcentre.education.tas.gov.au\/_layouts\/15\/DocIdRedir.aspx?ID=TASED-1087178304-5470\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">972 East Derwent Highway (PDF,461KB)<\/a> have been identified as preferred sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Click to view the <a href=\"https:\/\/documentcentre.education.tas.gov.au\/_layouts\/15\/DocIdRedir.aspx?ID=TASED-1087178304-5718\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New Youth Detention Facility Questions and Answers (PDF, 408KB)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Extensive public consultation was undertaken from 23 March to 4 May 2023 so that all stakeholders and the community had the opportunity to provide their feedback on these sites.
