{"id":1132,"date":"2017-06-20T10:13:06","date_gmt":"2017-06-20T00:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.decyp.tas.gov.au\/?page_id=1132"},"modified":"2023-09-21T15:23:52","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T05:23:52","slug":"school-starting-leaving-ages","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/decyp.dev.ionata.com\/zh\/learning\/primary-school-to-year-12\/school-starting-leaving-ages\/","title":{"rendered":"School starting and leaving ages in Tasmania"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"starting-school\">Starting school<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From the year after they turn 5, every child must be enrolled and attending school, or an approved home education program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that a child who has turned 5 on or by 1 January in any year must start Prep in that year, or receive approved home education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children can also attend Kindergarten from 4 years of age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"leaving-school\">Leaving school<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From 2020, young people need to stay in education or training until they:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>finish Year 12, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>receive a Certificate III, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reach the new minimum leaving age of 18<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>whichever happens first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Year 10, a young person can choose any of the following education and training options, or a combination of these options (if they are offered by the provider):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Years 11 and 12 at any government or non-government school or college, or tertiary provider \u2013 this may include an Australian School-based Apprenticeship<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification through any registered training organisation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an apprenticeship or traineeship with an employer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Young people with full-time employment, or other specific circumstances, can apply for an exemption to allow them to leave education and training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"before-kindergarten\">Before Kindergarten<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Schools offer programs to support families and young children before Kindergarten.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These include Birth to 5 initiatives,&nbsp;<em>Launching into Learning<\/em>, and pre-Kindergarten sessions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parents and children attend these sessions together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From 2020, eligible children with the greatest need children will be able to attend pre-school from 3 years of age (the year before Kindergarten). For more information, see the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/decyp.dev.ionata.com\/zh\/learning\/early-years\/working-together\/\">Working Together \u2013 Supporting Early Learning initiative<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"kindergarten\">Kindergarten<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kindergartens are play-based learning led by a registered teacher guided by the Early Years Learning Framework.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your child is 4 years old on or by 1 January in any year, they can go to Kindergarten.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your child will be able to attend Kindergarten for 15 hours a week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sessions may be a half day or full day, depending on what the school offers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"exemption-from-attending-compulsory-school\">Exemption from attending compulsory school<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If your child has participated in pre-school activities (such as Launching into Learning\/Kindergarten) and you don\u2019t think they are ready for compulsory school (Prep) at age 5, you should discuss options with the principal at your local school.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In specific individual circumstances, young people can seek an exemption from the requirement for compulsory education and training by completing the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/publicdocumentcentre.education.tas.gov.au\/Documents\/Application-for-Exemption-from-Attending-SchoolForm.pdf\">Application for Exemption from Attending School Form (PDF, 501KB)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"home-education\">Home education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Under the <em>Education Act 2016<\/em>, parents can use educational choice to register as home educators.&nbsp; This means they assume responsibility for delivering education to their children during their compulsory years of schooling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The registration of home education is managed by the Office of the Education Registrar (OER).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To find out more, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/oer.tas.gov.au\/home-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the OER website<\/a> or call 6165 6135.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"where-can-i-get-more-information\">Where can I get more information?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>For more information about when a child can start or leave school<\/strong>&#8211; talk to your child\u2019s teacher or principal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For information about requirements to participate in education and training \u2013 <\/strong>visit the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/decyp.dev.ionata.com\/zh\/learning\/career-pathways\/education-and-training-after-year-10\/\">Education and Training after Year 10 page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Starting school From the year after they turn 5, every child must be enrolled and attending school, or an approved home education program.
