We support students with English as an Additional Language (EAL)&nbsp;to be resilient, creative and curious thinkers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"about-us\">About Us<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The EAL Service supports schools and provides resources to help students learn English. We work with schools to:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ensure all students with EAL can learn&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>create successful links between home and school&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>increase skills and knowledge within the school to help support EAL students&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>help EAL students to successfully access and participate in mainstream programs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-193490\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">EAL Service Overview<\/h2><div id=\"ac-193490\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>The EAL Service provides resources to develop English language competence. The resources support access, participation and engagement in mainstream educational activities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>English is not the first language of EAL students. Students need extra support to develop proficiency in Standard Australian English (SAE).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supported EAL students:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>are new enrolments (i.e. less that 10 weeks)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>were born overseas or in Australia into a family where English is not spoken at home&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have little or no formal schooling in any country&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have had a limited education in their first language&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>begin school with limited or no exposure to English.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Support to EAL students aims to develop literacy in English by:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>learning to speak English&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>learning to listen and comprehend spoken English&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>learning to read and write English&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>learning through English at the same time as they learn English&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>learning about the Australian school system&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>learning about the Australian culture in both the school and community contexts.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Schools and colleges receive EAL Service support through:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>EAL specialist teachers&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Classroom teachers&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EAL resources and training&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>School based Teacher Assistants&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We use interpreters to ensure students and their parents\/carers receive essential information.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-193491\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Social Worker roles<\/h2><div id=\"ac-193491\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>EAL social workers support school-based staff.&nbsp; They provide EAL specific information and resources for help schools to support migrant students and families. They are also a means of bridging any gaps in the current support services between schools and home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-193492\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">EAL Support Model<\/h2><div id=\"ac-193492\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>The department has implemented a new EAL Support Model. This new model provides resourcing to schools. The EAL Support Model is a needs-based model. A student\u2019s English skill level determines the level of EAL support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"support-for-recently-enrolled-eal-students-is-provided-when\">Support for recently enrolled EAL students is provided when:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Student is a new enrolment i.e. less than 10 weeks&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students come from families where English is not the main home language&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students have had less than 5 years of English language instruction at school<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>English competence prevents students from accessing the mainstream curriculum&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The department\u2019s EAL support is a \u2018needs-based model\u2019. Eight Guiding Principles support the model.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-193493\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Guiding principles<\/h2><div id=\"ac-193493\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\">\n<li>Transparency<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li>Equity and Fairness&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\">\n<li>Accountability&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\">\n<li>Simplicity&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"5\">\n<li>Student-centred and Needs-based&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"6\">\n<li>Financial Sustainability&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"7\">\n<li>Inclusive Practice&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"8\">\n<li>Flexibility&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>English language levels determine eligibility and the level of EAL support. These levels align to the EAL\/D Learning Progression within the Australian Curriculum.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-193494\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">School Resource<\/h2><div id=\"ac-193494\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>The purpose of the resource is to assist EAL Students in their acquisition of English.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EAL resources to each school:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is not tagged to individual students&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is calculated using EAL student numbers plus English language levels&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is determined every year post census in Term 1.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Schools may be eligible for EAL Teacher support from the EAL Service and\/or money.
