The team will talk to you about why you are interested in adoption and what it involves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Information sessions are held regularly and must be attended by anyone interested in adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please contact the team to find out more information and register your interest in attending a session. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phone: <a href=\"tel:0361660422\">(03)&nbsp;6166 0422<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Email:&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:adoption.service@decyp.tas.gov.au\">adoption.service@decyp.tas.gov.au<\/a>&nbsp;to register for an information session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"approval-as-prospective-adoptive-parents\">Approval as prospective adoptive parents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>People wishing to adopt a child must be assessed and approved as suitable prospective adoptive parents, before a child can be placed in their care.&nbsp;&nbsp;The approval process is&nbsp;set out&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.tas.gov.au\/view\/html\/inforce\/current\/sr-2016-108#AT@EN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Adoption Regulations 2016<\/em><\/a><\/em>&nbsp;and applicants must complete the approval process successfully before they can be placed with either a local or overseas child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"legislation-supporting-adoption\">Legislation supporting adoption <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Adoption in Tasmania is governed by the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislation.tas.gov.au\/linkto.w3p;doc_id=41++1988+AT@EN+CURRENT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Adoption Act 1988<\/em><\/a><\/em>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.tas.gov.au\/view\/html\/inforce\/current\/sr-2016-108#AT@EN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Adoption Regulations 2016<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tasmania also adheres to the principles of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcch.net\/en\/instruments\/conventions\/specialised-sections\/intercountry-adoption\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hague Convention on protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcch.net\/en\/instruments\/conventions\/full-text\/?cid=69\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in relation to Intercountry Adoptions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"past-adoptions-support\">Past adoptions support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result of changes made as part of the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislation.tas.gov.au\/linkto.w3p;doc_id=41++1988+AT@EN+CURRENT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Adoption Act 1988<\/em><\/a><\/em>&nbsp;adoptees have the right to know about their origins and identity.
