National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in schools

Some students with disability are also eligible for National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports. Schools will work with the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and State Government agencies to support their access to NDIS supports through schools

Tasmanian Government schools make adjustments so that students with a disability can access, take part and engage in education on the same basis as their peers.

Some students with disability are also eligible for National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports.

We will work to support families if requested to assist their access to NDIS.

Some common NDIS supports that student may be accessing when they are at school are:

Early Childhood Approach

The early childhood approach helps children younger than 6 with developmental delay or children younger than 9 with disability and their families to access the right support when they need it. ECA supports families to help children develop the skills they need to take part in daily activities.

Children younger than 6 do not need a diagnosis to get support through the early childhood approach where there are concerns about their development.

In Tasmania, the Early Childhood Intervention Service (ECIS) works with families to help them access ECA/ NDIS supports.

Student Equipment Needs in School

ren with disability may need specific equipment to help them access and take part in education. This may include things like:

  • wheelchairs
  • ramps
  • hoists
  • commodes
  • specialist seating.

The Student Equipment Needs in School Fact Sheet (PDF, 575KB) shows the different ways students with disability can access the equipment their therapists recommend.

Personal Care Support

The DECYP provides personal care in schools as part of the Tasmanian Government’s contribution to the NDIS.

School Leavers Employment Supports

School Leavers Employment Supports (SLES) are available for students completing year 12, over the school leaving age. They are tailored for each participant and their goals. They consider what supports are needed to either enter employment or further training opportunities.

The NDIS has created a teacher toolkit to assist students and their families consider post-year 12 options and supports.

NDIS Grievance and Review Process

Families and NDIS participants (active or potential) have the right to request a review of decisions made by the NDIA. This might be about access to the NDIS, plans or the supports approved. Find out at the NDIS Internal Review Process.
