Exceptions

The following exception information is provided as guidance only. Managers are to use their discretion as to whether non-DECYP workers accessing their sites need to complete training. Managers must also put risk mitigation strategies in place. This might include strategies like full supervision by a DECYP employee.

Parents and caregivers

Parents and caregivers do not need to complete the training if you are:

  • attending the DECYP site with your own children
  • participating in DECYP events where you are only supporting your own children.

You must complete the training if you are volunteering or working with children other than your own.

Visiting external organisations

If DECYP children and young people are visiting an external organisation, including sporting venues, external site staff and external bus drivers supporting associated travel do not need to complete DECYP Safeguarding training.

Instead, DECYP workers arranging the visit must follow the requirements of DECYP’s relevant policies and procedures. This includes undertaking risk assessments and ensuring all adults are fully supervised by DECYP workers who have undertaken their Safeguarding training.

All DECYP workers and volunteers helping with excursions and similar events must complete the training.

Visitors attending DECYP sites (including Emergency Services)

Visitors attending a DECYP site who will only have incidental contact* with children and young people may not need to complete Safeguarding training. For example, if the site manager determines it has adequate risk mitigation strategies in place. This might include full supervision by DECYP workers. Site managers have discretion to make this decision.

Emergency service workers attending DECYP sites to respond to an emergency do not need to complete Safeguarding training. They also do not need to be fully supervised while on site.

*Incidental contact means when a person works at the same place of work as a child or young person but does not provide services to them. An example of incidental contact is a guest speaker presenting in front of a school and then leaving. More than incidental contact would be if the guest speaker then joins the students in small groups for discussions
