Parents and caregivers
Parents/caregivers do not need to complete the training if you:
- attend a DECYP site with your own children, or
- take part in DECYP events to support and work only with your children.
Training expectations by role
External organisations
External organisations do not need to complete the safeguarding training to host excursions.
All DECYP employees and volunteers helping with excursions must complete the training and hold a current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP).
Refer to the Off-Campus Activities Planning Procedure for further information.
Canteen volunteers
All DECYP volunteers, including canteen volunteers, must complete the training and hold a current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP).
External work placement students
If you are a work placement student 18 years or over, you must complete the Safeguarding Training.
If you are studying with the University of Tasmania, you will complete the training at the start of the year. This is part of the compliance requirements for professional experience placements.
Presenters
If you are presenting to students, children and families you are not required to complete the training. This may be the case if you are presenting on behalf of an organisation at a school assembly.
Conditional training expectations
Bus drivers
If you are a bus driver contracted by DECYP (such as by a school or CFLC), or DECYP owns the bus, you must complete the training.
For other types of bus drivers – this will be decided during the excursion risk assessment. For example:
- If an excursion is fully supervised by a DECYP employee, and you are not with children on your own, you would not need to complete the training.
- If it’s a longer excursion, and you have more opportunities to interact with the children, you would need to complete the training.
Sporting organisations
If you work for a sporting organisation and are visiting a DECYP site, you must complete the training. You must also hold a current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP).
If children and young people are visiting a sporting organisation, you do not have to do the training. Instead, DECYP workers arranging the visit must follow DECYP’s Off-Campus Activities Planning Procedure.
